How To Wax Your Skis

Waxing your skis is a simple process. It is just time-consuming, especially if you’ve never done it before or you’re not used to doing it. But you should never skip out on waxing. If you don’t wax your skis before you ride them, they will develop more damage if they had even the smallest amount of old ski wax left on them. Skis that do not have wax on them for long periods will dry out and shrink and become unusable, even if they have never been used before. So applying wax regularly is a necessity. Even if your skis say “No-wax skis, “you still have to wax them. No wax skis were created in an attempt to create skis that were easier to maintain and don’t need much work. However, no-wax skis did not perform as well as skis that had to have wax applied to them. Wax is an important part of skiing, and it does not look like it will be made obsolete any time in the future.

There are several things you need to wax your skis. You will need your preferred wax, a waxing iron, some cloths, a wax scraper, and some brushes.

To start, flip your skis over, so the bottom of the skis shows. Take a waxing scraper and scrape down any excess wax that still lingers on the skis. You should not place new wax over old wax, especially when you add wax to the bottom of the skis. Scrape all the excess wax off, and don’t forget to scrape any wax stuck to the sides of the skis. What’s all of the waxes off, take a brush and brush off the bottom and sides of the ski and remove any dirt that was stuck underneath the wax.

Now that all of the wax and the dirt is removed and your skis are clean, it’s time to add the new wax to your skis. Plug the waxing iron in and wait until the iron is warm. Then hold it over the bottom of the ski. Gently press the wax onto the iron, and it will Immediately melt. The melted wax should then drip onto the bottom of the ski. With the wax dripping onto the ski, slowly drift the wax onto the entire ski. You will not need to cover the entire ski in wax drips. All you have to do is leave a small trail of wax in the middle of the ski, And it should be more than enough to cover it. 

Then, set the wax back down into its container, set the iron over the ski, and slowly move back to spread the wax. Do not move the iron in circles or back and forth. If you press down too hard, you will burn the unprotected ski, and if you don’t press down hard enough, the ski will not spread evenly. Don’t be surprised if this takes a few times, especially if this is your first time doing it. It’s probably fine if you wax drips onto the sides or falls down onto the tabletop or ground.

 After you finish spreading that coat of wax, look over the ski and see if there are any areas that are still uncovered. If there is, drip wax over that section and spread it slowly in One Direction. Do not worry about excess wax because it will be removed.

Once the entire ski is covered in wax, the top side of the ski will be very warm. So now you must wait one or two hours until the entire board cools again. While you’re waiting, you can wax the other ski.

Not that your ski is cooled, take the wax scraper you used to remove the old wax, and now shave down any excess wax from the new coat. You know when you have scraped off all of the excess wax when it no longer comes off. The wax has to be scraped at a 45-degree angle. If you think you are removing too much wax, you are not. Don’t forget to shave or scrape the sides of the skis as well.

After you remove the excess wax, take a brush and brush your entire ski in several solid Strokes. The brush takes off excess wax does that is lingering after you scrape the excess wax has been scraped off. Plus, brushing your skis makes it easier for them to glide over wet and hard snow. Now use a softer brush to polish your skis, and you’re all done.

Waxing your skis is definitely not a 5-minute job. It is likely to take an entire afternoon, so whenever you go on a ski trip, be responsible and wax your skis before you leave. It would be best if you wax your skis before you even think of packing up any of your skiing equipment in your car or bag. It is the most time-consuming activity, so you should do it first to get out of the way.
